Comerford Special
Thanks to our old friend Eastie for pointing us to this bike on UK eBay. This is one bee-yoo-ti-ful mosheen. Not too pricey, but I'd never use it. And bike's that are ornaments aren't my thing. I'd like a road going version of something like this though. Any suggestions on what I should look for?
'This rare machine is a mid 1930's Comerford Special fitted with a 500cc JAP engine and is of the type used by the 1937 World Speedway Champion Jack Milne. The bike came to me as a not quite complete non runner and has now been finished and put back into full working order. The engine is a 1935/36 as denoted by the letter D on the crankcases and is of the "long 4" variety. Being of this period it is one of the rarer engines which has inline pushrods with dog legged cam followers. Also, in keeping with other pre war engines, the crankcases are aluminium and the timing side mainshaft is of a smaller diameter with only eight rollers in the main bearing instead of the usual ten. The machine comes complete with period tyres, the front one being of the beaded edge type. The clutch is a Burman Dirt Track and this model also has a hand operated Best & Lloyd oil pump (as well as the mechanical twin Pilgrim pump) for extra lubrication to the crankcase.'
