OneTrueSaxon

OneTrueSaxon, Nottingham-based suppliers of Great British clobber to discerning indie superstars and terrace casuals, got hold of a copy of Sideburn. And rather like it. They put this on their website.

'A couple of days ago our friendly postman dropped a copy of SIDEBURN magazine through the letter box of OTS HQ. Ripping open the envelope, I was greeted by an image of an Evil Knievel look-a-like bustin a power slide. With my attention grabbed, I started flicking through the pages of SIDEBURN, only to realise minutes later that I had stumbled across something special; not just a great magazine created by a couple a guys with a passion for motorbikes but ….Flat Track Racing! Flat Track Racing is a form of speedway, the difference being, a traditional speed way bike has a 500cc engine, one gear and the acceleration of a small rocket - a purpose built steed which has to be raced on a purpose built track. In Flat Track Racing you can use just about any bike you wish with a few basic restrictions: one brake, tyres with a minimal tread and a big old engine to pull you round the track. This makes it more affordable to those wanting to get into moto sport and hopefully we can look forward to tracks popping up all over the UK soon. SIDEBURN is produced by a couple of guys out of their own money who have successfully turned their passion for drifting into a niche motorcycle magazine. www.sideburnmagazine.com Good luck guys, the Good People at OTS.

Wish you were there?

Evel, Skip, Swede, Butch and Destruction Derby. Hey fellas, those are some great names you got going on there. Now show us what you can do with those sickles.

Stop planning, start doing

It’s great to have all the kit, the new lid, a big van or race camper, fancy leathers and all that, but too many people worry that if everything isn’t just so, if they’re not keeping up with the Joneses, if they look a bit amateur, then there’s no point in joining in. That view is horseshit.
Look back at photos from the 50s and guys are trail riding on full fendered Harleys with leather saddlebags, getting three feet of air on WL protected by nothing but a leather, bus conductor's cap. Look further back and they’re climbing Widowmaker-style peaks on bikes with exposed valves, wearing nothing but jodhpurs and a woolly jumper. Now people want everything. They have a bike for this, a bike for that, kit for dusty tracks and kit for mud. Great if you can afford, but not essential.
Stop waiting for everything to be perfect. If you want to do something on your bike, just try it. If you want to start racing dirt track, use anything you can get your hands on. If you can’t get your bike to the track, don’t make an excuse, just find a way.
Because where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Sideburn's good friends Dave Skooter Farm, Steve H and Randal all went to the Hot Rod Hayride to introduce dirt track to Europe's greasers. It chucked it down, but the fellas did enough to get an immediate invite back next year. Here are some great shots borrowed from Neal - Retro Photo UK.

Hot Yamaha

From Ben Charlton in England

Hi Sideburn
Found these in my camera so thought I'd post 'em.
Bike still ongoing-a mate of mine is re-making the Champion seat unit and tank in aluminium (he makes CCM tanks and specials) as the glass tank probably won't MOT*. As soon as that's done I'll be done and will send more.
Had fun trying to locate parts as frame's such a bitsa-early DT250 modded frame, with YZ headstock, MX400 forks, clamps and rear wheel, hand spun exhaust and a Sun front wheel, genuine Champion glass, and a fully sorted MX400 engine with a 43mm Mikuni flatslide.
Bought it locally from a bloke that had imported it from the states, but had never ran it-he'd tried to flog it on ebay a couple of times and had no luck getting what it owed him-he was so fed up I almost stole it from him! Was still covered in grit and lockwired up with vinnie bones on all the exposed metal, so must have seen some action!
Looking forward to the next mag-when's it ready??

All the best, Ben

* SIDEBURN NOTE TO NON-BRITS. The MOT is the annual Government test of all vehicles for roadworthiness. A pain in the arse.

Brave man

Steve Hazell races this modified street bike Sportster 1200 on Britain's piddling little speedway tracks. Line up next to him in a heat and all you can hear is the bike bouncing off the limiter on every straight. It took me about a year to build up courage to try pass him (I'm no natural racer, in case you hadn't guessed). God knows how fast he'd be on a proper race bike.
He'll probably be racing at Peterborough. He goes well there. Last year he crashed into the boards, bent his forks and still came back the next day.

Punk

Before racing at the Wainfleet I was painting my new übergarage's door. Battleship grey. And I was playing these CDs. They put me in the mood for some foot breaking at the Mega Bowl.
The Saints recorded this in 1976. Few have bettered it.
The Dwarves are just unhinged. In a singalong way.
