What's the writing on the banking in the background. Looks Russian. GI

It is Cyrillic script (ie Russian and various other eastern European languages).

The three letters you can see would render into english as 'ch', 'i'/'ee', and 't' respectively. the fourth appears to be an 'a'.

What the word might be I don't have a clue.

Definitely in favor of using whatever tools you've got to hand for the job, even if they're 'incorrect'.
Although I usually wear leathers under my woolly jumper, don't have a tiger shooting Pith helmet in my wardrobe to complete the look. Yet.
