Dymag Back From The Grave

At 02:31am this morning we got this comment made on the RIP 'Dymag Bankrupt' post we wrote back in December:

'I hope you will take this as good news. We are re-launching the Dymag Motorcycle wheels business in March and taking pre-orders now. Original tooling, and designs for all wheels being phased back in. The Carbons will be the last back in late 2010.'

Ah, see? All is well. Long live Dymag, and their lovely wheelsets.

I am never sure whether I am happy that a great British brand continues or sad that the pride associated with Made in Britain is lost?

I get the same feelings walking around the old Sunbeam / Villiers factories in Wolverhampton with all the clocks still stopped at 3:40pm when it closed...

The AJS factory now has a Waitrose plonked on top of it, but does at least have a great statue hidden away in a shrubbery.

Perhaps I'm just an old romantic...

It seems that the shift of production resources towards the east is unstoppable.

It's probably best we get to terms with it.

It wouldn't stop me from ordering Dymags. As long as they keep the quality up.

To clarify - we are setting up a small production unit in Chippenham, UK and will be keeping as much production in UK as possible.

Some components such as Magnesium forgings have always been from non UK sources - no-one can do them in UK, but the Mag cast wheels will be from UK.

We must walk before we run, so it will be step by step as we re-launch products.

We will be relying on the Dymag loyalists such as you guys to support our business as we compete against worldwide competition.

I am personally moving back to UK later this year to live near the unit, so this will continue to be a British company.

I hope this allays concerns. Hopefully we can do something to keep high value and innovative engineering in UK.

Hi CJMSHELLEy01,

How about some Flat/Street track specific wheels to replace the much loved Performance Machine "Straight 8" that is no longer manufactured?

a 19'' (3'' front and 3,5 rear) no nonsense design would be great!
