On Channel 4 tonight at 8pm. He tries to break the British land speed cycle record tonight. It looks great. G

As intense as any Record attempt I've ever seen. Anyone who's ever been to Pendine will tell you, you can't do 112mph on a pushbike on a beach.............Legend

That really didn't look like any fun at all!
I'd be interested to know why they had to go to Pendine though: the programme said it was the only place long enough to get up to speed but the brief shot of the previous record attempt was clearly taken on tarmac. I seem to remember the MIRA testing track has a 2 mile straight, which would have made for a much more pleasant experience for Mr Martin but possibly not such good TV.

They had MIRA booked, but the track cancelled because they thought it was too dangerous and didn't want blood on their hands. MIRA has a bowl that would've been perfect.
The practice was done at Bruntingthorpe but it wasn't long enough.

Thanks Gary, I imagine the Risk Assessment Officer at MIRA might have had their work cut out putting a "safe spin" on the project. After all, what could possibly go wrong?

Dutch cyclist Fred Rompelberg reached 167.044 mph behind a motor paced vehicle at Bonneville Salt Flats some years ago.

Harley, the clip they showed in the programme was Dave Le Grys when he broke the record on the M42 the day before it opened to traffic.
