Catalina Race Results

Dimitri won his Premier Open Twin B Class. Felicitations!
From JC. Hilderbrand:
...."One of the most interesting racers, and certainly the best dressed, was Dimitri Coste. The Frenchman made the trek all the way from Europe to compete on his 1967 Triumph. Apparently something was lost in translation during the planning process and Coste mistakenly had a set of custom white leathers made up with the incorrect number. Considering the effort it took to get across the world for this event, race organizers gladly swapped numbers in order to ease the sting. The slender French rider overcame a few crashes, one that nearly took out two spectators, to win the Premier Open Twin B class."
Read about Dimitri and the Triumph he raced in Catalina in Sideburn 5.

The next sentence of the report then mentions another hero of ours...
"Another special rider is Homer Knapp. This grizzled motocross veteran raced a Harley-Davidson in the original Catalina GPs and he raced again today - on the same bike!" Duuuuuude. BP

It might say H-D on the tank but that thing's got a JAP engine! Even easier to get spares for one of those when you launch it through the scenery!

Nope, that's not a J.A.P. motor, it's an inlet-over-exhaust HD from the early 20's. They used 'em on boardtracks. It HD's race motor at the time.

I've got a pair of Webco gloves with the rubber strips on 'em. Nut you won't get 'rm unless you pry 'rm off my cold dead hands (to quote RR)

On closer inspection that lump is an HD unit, so he painted JAP on the timing chest to confuse numpties like me, how cool can one guy be?

I heard that he had a heart attack during the race.

Jeff's comment put the wind up us, but we spoke to Andrew Gray who knows Homer well and he says it's not true. He's got a cold, but that's it. G
