Flashback: Rollerburn

Back in 2011 Sideburn and some friends came up with an idea for a bike show that incorporated riding, all different kids of custom bikes, stalls, live music and roller derby.

It was the kickstart for a lot of the current UK 'shed built' scene, like the Bike Shed shows.

This advert was made by Drogo Michie, who later joined the DTRA as Thunderbike racer on his own, very smart Co-Built Rotax.

Guy Martin came, so did Charlie Chuck (Uncle Peter) and I joined them for a Rollerball race at the end. It was as sketchy as hell. G

Glamour

As if Dirt Quake required any more glamour, the Sideburn Roller Derby Team (above) have transformed into the Sideburn Roller Display Team for one night only.
Additional glamour will be supplied by Topsy, Kenny Roquette and Conway Castle of The Stags who are carrying out MC duties.
Remember, racing from 11am, main event (chopper speedway, bands, vintage speedway, stunt riders, assorted lunacy) from 4pm.
£10 on the door or buy Dirt Quake tickets in advance, save money and get free stickers.
Also, we have had some event T-shirts printed. They're black and will be £12 on the day. Sizes S to XXL and some ladies ones, too. Anyone racing in the Dirt Quake classes will be given £5 off the shirt. G

Everyone knows you get a free Minx and Stevie A3 poster with every Sideburn 6, right? We have about three of the orange T-shirts (with 9 on the front, not the original 13 edition) left, too. G

Roller Derby Aggro

Look at the determination on the girl in the white vest on the left. Don't mess! She looks part-vampire.
Aggro!
More aggro!

It's just about the most complicated sport on the planet, with a cast of thousands involved, but it still makes good viewing. We had a family day out watching the Lincolnshire Bombers A and B teams v Manchester and Newcastle yesterday. It was good to see a couple of Sideburn readers there (as amused and bemused as me). And it's going to be great to mix roller derby in with bikes, the world's only Rollerball drag race and other stuff at ROLLERBURN. G

ROLLERBURN

The good news keeps coming!

Sideburn magazine, the world’s most suave motorcycle magazine, is organising and promoting a one-off, cross-genre event to go down in history.
Rollerburn is a festival of two-wheeled death traps and roller derby vixens. On Saturday 19 November 2011, at Newark Showground, Nottinghamshire, we will host nine hours of family entertainment incorporating a full roller derby match, followed by the world’s first (and probably last) Indoor Rollerball drag race: three lightning fast racers riding three motorcycles towing three fearless roller girls. One winner.
One of the confirmed racers is Guy Martin, arguably Britain’s favourite bike racer, Isle of Man TT hero, star of TT 3D – Closer to the Edge and the BBC primetime series – The Boat That Guy Built. His attendance guarantees a sell-out crowd.

In addition we have an unforgettable live set from the UK’s premier garage punk ‘craperet’ act, The Stags; an invite-only show of the finest custom bikes; dealer stalls; bar and launch of Sideburn 9.

If you're a business looking to have a vendor stall or find out about sponsorship opportunities, get in touch with us. It's going to be wild.

I wonder where they got that idea...

Icon's next ad shoot involves rollergirls and (electric) motorbikes to try their version of Rollerball. If you want to see what Sideburn did with Rollerball buy issue 6. We also had legendary director Alex Cox write an essay about the film for the same issue. G
Thanks to Adriaan for the tip-off.

Kustom Kulture Blast-Off photos

This, I'm assured, was based on a Citroen BX. Google it. I can't believe it.
The patch on the cut-off of Alex from Skeleton Chop Shop. Neat. He also has the tattoo of the C90 tape in the montage above.
Speedway x Skateboard x Seafront merry-go-round style paint
Alex, Tim and Tim's car and my lad.

I've got posts backing up for weeks. This is the Kustom Kulture Blast-Off that happened in Spalding two weeks ago. I only had time for a quick runaround as I had to travel up north the same day. Pinstripers from all over the world converged, there were some good old-school Brit kustom veehickles and the lovely Lincolnshire Bombers roller derby team. Apologies for the crap photos. Me and my lad did them with my phone. G

Get Sideburn at Kustom Kulture Blast-Off

Our friends at the Kitschy Kustom Kraft Kollective have stocked up with issues of Sideburn to sell at this weekend's show. Their stand is in the outside area. We've also found out that Minx (featured in Sideburn 6 and on the free poster given away with that issue) will be rolling around the show site both days along with her fellow Lincolnshire Bomber Rollergirls .

Why Rollerball?

As well as a seriously high-brow deconstruction of the 1975 cult classic by acclaimed director and film buff Alex Cox, SB#6 also has a strange story about a man in a metalflake helmet, fishnet stockings, and very small wheels. And asks why? BP

Lincolnshire Bombers next date

The Lincolnshire Bombers Roller Derby team have another match in Newark (Nottinghamshire, not New Jersey) this weekend. I can't make it, but you should.
Look very carefully at the team (as if you weren't already). The less attractive ones in the middle are their sponsors - Motörhead. No, I'm not kidding. GI

Roller Derby Devastation

On Saturday I took the kids to the Carnival of the Strange roller derby festival. Met up with Minx a'Matosis (who used to puts together Wrench magazine and is one of the forces behind the Lincolnshire Bombers Roller Derby team).
I'd never seen it before, but something about the ingredients had me intrigued...
Tattooed, face-painted, hot-panted, fishnet-stockinged women on roller skates, everywhere. Live bands, kids' facepainting, fairground games. Then the roller girls own brand of 'Go fast, Turn left' started. It was nearly as brutal as a short track first corner. It took a while to get my head around the rules and longer to understand the scoring, but it hardly mattered. It looks fun.
And the names are great too - She'za Payne; Fight Cub, Kym Tensive-Care... And now, three days later, everytime I close my eyes I still see athletic thighs pumping...
Great day out. I'll keep you posted on more derby action. G

Roller Derby Extravaganza!

Lincolnshire. It took me a while to warm to my adopted county, but not only is Lincolnshire the epicentre of European flat track, there is also a roller Derby extravaganza going on just up the road on Saturday. A family friendly event. And its sponsored by Motörhead. Kids, get in the car, we're going! GI

Roller Derby?

Well, they race on an oval and only go left. And the Lincolnshire Bombers are going to carry Sideburn's name into battle.
This is Minx A'matosis, Kym-tensive Care, She'za Payne and Jenny Thunders. And that's Ms Thunders' lid.
