Kind of.
Maxwell has produced a load of artwork for Sideburn over the years - hand-drawn titles, stickers, T-shirts... And his latest work includes an incredible gilded Shoei helmet. Check him on his @datanoster instagram feed or Maxwell Paternoster tumblr.

hope you're enjoying the holidays over there. My dad (Frank, #39) and I went out for a quick rip around the backyard on my sister's Honda on Xmas day, and happened to get a pic of me wearing the Sideburn scarf I'd just unwrapped. Merry xmas indeed, it's my new favorite scarf.

Sam Christmas

I like photographers. If we had more room I'd definitely have a couple. Anyway, earlier this year I was paired up with the photographer Sam Christmas, who I'd never worked with, on an assignment at TT on a project. Sam had just passed his bike test a few weeks before and had bought a Triumph Speed Four. The week after he passed his test he rode to Cannes in the South of France for a party.
Sam shot Maxwell Paternoster's BSA for Sideburn 9 and is working on a project of photographing garages and other places people work on their bikes. Above is James in his bedroom. Below is Maxwell in his remote shed.

Luyckx

'Built from scratch' it's such an over-used expression, it's refreshing to have a reminder of what it really means. Beyond the unobtainium 24" tyres, one-off rims to match, and the donor '73 Shovelhead block, Belgian Tom Luyckx (pronounced Lerks), really has made most of this boardtracker with his bare hands. Sideburn #9 is a treasure trove. BP

Wine Corks and Malt Vinegar

Shot on location in Dungeness by acclaimed London photographer Sam Christmas, Maxwell's B33. Dark and foreboding. Read up on Maxwell's tips for cheap DIY clutch pads (that don't really work but do give off a full bodied aroma in heavy traffic) and and an olde fashioned chemical bath for cleaning rusting gearbox parts (that works a treat). Big-Ass Motor in a Skinny-Ass Chassis

Bostrom Brothers’ Gregg’s Customs R1 Tracker, El Mirage is one of the playground's big enough not to pile straight into something. Modelled on Kenny's infamous 1975 TZ700, it's just as looney tunes. Field Day in Sideburn 9

Sideburn 9 is at the printers. We have another great story from our man in Japan, Big Mattie (below). The Field Day guys are a bunch of amateur flat track racers with a real DIY ethic and love of older, often cheaper bikes. Kindred spirits for sure. Sideburn 9 will be available for pre-order soon. G

Shit I Been Shot

Sideburn #9 has just been sent off to the printers so I thought I'd treat myself to a day off and some fresh air. I forgot how good it tastes. Took the boy and my new toy; an OM Flyer (26" wheels), to the excellent new downhill BMX track at Stockwood, Bristol. I only sustained one injury. It was worth it. BP NB I am an old man so I am allowed brakes.

Back in my first full-time job in magazines, at Streetfighters back in 95, 96 -ish, I worked with Garry Stuart a few times. Back then he was travelling to America all the time, when I still thought London was a different planet. He got in touch this week to say he's putting some of his work, old and new, online. I love magazines

After months of putting it off I decided to tidy up my shed/office on Monday. I'm still not finished and it doesn't take long for it to become a mess again, but it's good to get at least some magazines in order (especially as I refer back to magazines a lot) and send the chaff to the recycler.

One fireproof drawer is full of Dice. They're up to 40 issues! Amazing achievement. Inspirational mag. I have the full set. Oh yes.

While I was at the Stafford Show at the weekend I bought some copies of Street Bikers from the Magazine Man. They cost an arm and a leg, but I love them. While I was flicking through the latest I saw a page on the Japanese flat track club Field Day- who we have a great feature on in Sideburn 9 (coming soon-ish). I looked closer, next to the photo of the bizarre pre-race dance ritual and noticed they were flying the Sideburn flag!

A final bit of magazine news, one of Britain's major publishers, Bauer (German lot who took over EMAP) are supporting the biking charity Riders for Health - co-founded by Randy Mamola. Every subscription Bauer get (on a number of mags including Bike, PB, Classic Bike, Practical Sportsbike, MCN, Q, Empire...) they're giving 'up to £10' to charity. If you don't know, Riders for Health supply bikes and expertise to African doctors to allow them to ride to and treat isolated villages. Well done big business!

Co-Built Champion

Anthony Brown of Co-Built is the British Thunderbike champion. Anthony is probably the nicest fella in a paddock full of nice fellas and he won the title on a bike his three-man cooperative designed and built. Co-Built created the 4130-steel frame and swingarm from scratch. They designed and made the yokes (triple clamps), commissioned the twin shocks, made the exhaust...

There are only three adult classes in UK racing: Short track (for DTX bikes, though Thunderbikes can enter); Thunderbikes (air-cooled framers, road-based bikes and any twins or multis inc. XR750s) and mini bikes (bloodthirsty thugs on tuned putt-putts). The Thunderbikes class has had over 20 entries at each of the six rounds this year. Anthony had to fight for it.
There were five complete Co-Built Thunderbikes racing on Saturday night, with plenty more bikes - including the official Suzuki team - using Co-Built parts. Expect a big story on the fellas in Sideburn 9.

I would just like to add my pat on the back...
Anthony is deceptively fast. On first hearing his "Go Slow To Go Fast" mantra, it seemed preposterous in the extreme. He doesn't ride with the obvious flair of our Italian friends, or the tits out gay abandon of the STUK riders that have defected from professional speedway, he looks more like a sack of spuds. But all the people I have approached about (my awful) technique and the art/science of racing, has an Anthony quote. At Buxton he was explaining to Drogo that "A corner has 2 parts. A beginning and an end. Finish 1 before you start the 2nd". Drogo was jumping up and down that he now had the golden key to success. I still have no clue what he was going on about. Anthony is Yoda (except he doesn't have hairy ears). Yoda we Love you. BP
