Stephen White writes for the respected English fashion rag Dazed & Confused. Earlier in the year I met up with him in Amsterdam for a beer. It ended up being a historical 5 hour stint and a turning point for Sideburn. He has given us the confidence to think BIGger than the kitchen table we have until now utilized as our publishing base. He is well educated, well read, well travelled, and well meaning. He is more officially Dazed's head of advertising - and by definition one would expect a man in a grey suit, but he looks more like a beat poet. BP

Corporate motorcycle design today really is quite unchallenging and uninspiring. Do you think with cult specialist motorcycle magazines like Sideburn and Dice appearing on the newsstand, depicting an alternative scene and range of custom machines, times may be a changing?
Ian Barry:
For sure. The whole bad-boy posturing thing has been a cliche for so long and it's relief to have publications appearing that have a sense of humor and speak to riders and enthusiasts from a place of unadulterated passion. We live in an age of marketing and impostors and the motorcycle world has been filled with clones and giant companies serving up commercials and images of what's cool and what's not. I think that sociologically speaking, people have a huge desire to be a part of things that are real. Magazines like DicE and Sideburn speak to those people - they're not about marketing and posing. The focus is on the builders and motorcycles not the sponsors and marketing. It's an exciting time.

Dick Mann replica

Every July the AMA runs a vintage bike weekend in Ohio at and around Mid-Ohio roadcourse.? It is a bookend to an AMA roadrace national either the weekend before or after too.? The Friday night of Vintage Days Weekend is a vintage only half-mile at nearby Ashland county fairgrounds that I can't usually make.? The 3 attached pictures are of a Dick Mann replica BSA Goldstar that ran there, that was on display in thge Team Obsolete pits at the roadraces.? What is also cool is that they took the time to get the #64 exactly correct.? Dick Mann was # 64 when he won #1 in 1964 on Matchless roadracers and BSA dittrackers.? He later inherited #2 from Dick Klamfoth when he retired.? (He wore #4 the year the AMA assigned numbers based on finishing points in 1971, a method that only lasted the one season due to it's unpopularity)? Roger

Barbara Fritchie Classic

'I was at the Barbara Fritchie Classic (oldest continually running half-mile in the US I think - this was the 87th running) earlier this month. Sorry the "action shot" is a tad blurry - man he seemed a lot closer when I hit the button - they were movin'. I had a couple others but either I timed it wrong, way out of focus, etc. Oh well.
The Triumph did pretty well and was probably the oldest bike out there. The SV650 was pretty interesting - custom frame and no airbox / reworked throttle bodies, etc. The owner said it actually made too much power and spun up too much so he was selling it.
Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.' Stephen

Return of the King
Great news for UK and Euro flat track, Chris Carr is coming back to race, teach and hang out. The seven-time AMA Grand National Champion will be kicking limey arse at Rye House on Sunday October 11th.
Chris will also be leading another flat track school, also at Rye House, on the Friday 9th (Rye House speedway are at home on Saturday unfortunately).
And, because we just can't get enough of him, Sideburn is promoting an intimate evening with Chris Carr. Details are sketchy (surprise), but it'll be on Thursday 8th, the day before the school, it'll be in the Peterborough area, Chris will give an after-dinner speech type thing (without the dinner), then Q&A. Stay tuned for more details.

18" Street Tracker Tyres
We're often asked "What about 18" tyres for street trackers?" One solution is using two front tyres from a Suzuki VanVan. It sports Dunlop K180 which is a traditional chunky tread pattern. 130/80-18 front and a comedy 180/80-18 rear. This fat kid doesn't look like it's had much sideways action, but it's not a bad bike.
