Perris

Julian of Deus LA kindly organized a run-what-you-bring at the Perris track, two hours east of LA (crawling in rush-hour traffic), a loose rabble of Hell On Wheels, Deusites, Co-Built, a big Biltwell crew and other friends of Sideburn came out. Everything from crappy plastic scooters to a fully accessorised RGS1200 BMW was throttled around the short track until the sun went down. Iced Beer. Good times.
Co-Built Geoff on Conrad Leach's desert sled.
Dave Skooter Farm in his sparkly new Biltwell Gringo and Jeannette.
Dorinda ripping it up on her Triumph.
Nevin wing-ning-nign
Hayden's Hell On Wheels Triumph.
Mule showing the kids how to do it on his Yamaha TT500.
Bixby Moto showing us that your Mum's 150cc Amstar is all you need.
Gary on the Mule TT500.
Always good to have a seamstress on standby for every eventuality.
Homer Knapp bought his 1928 hand-shift Harley JD (featured in SB#7) along for us to try. An awe-inspiring bike - and man.
Put knobblies on anything and it's legit. Kiyo's CB750/4
Great to finally put names to faces and meet Richard 'Mule Motorcycles' Pollock.

Joe from Ohio

Whenever we get an order from an address we don't have on record, we send out an email asking where the buyer found out about Sideburn (market researtch!). We get a variety of different responses. This is a recent interesting one.

I heard of you guys from the flat track websites. I have issues 1-6, thought I should start catching up when money allows. I'm a flat tracker from ohio, land of the pea gravel half miles. Here's a pic of me from a couple years ago on my beloved TT 500.

SIDEBURN USA Thank You

Our jet lagged heads have finally stopped spinning. A very big thank you to all the people that made our road trip so memorable (even a redneck in his pick-up who flipped us a bird for no apparent reason, when we pulled off the interstate for a milkshake. Maybe it was the Californian plate on our rental? My Fargo bowl haircut? Kirk's Bollywood CD that was streaming out the window? I'm still downloading a gzillion photos.
Matching the ludicrousness of our Dirt Quake GB steak and kidney pud pace-car was no problem for Thor. When we turned up at See See in Portland and he wheelied out a pizza trike, we knew Dirt Quake USA would be a good one. BP

Dirt Quake USA Mini Report

From Thor at See See Motorcycles. Photos by Dustin Aksland...

Legendary Flat track racer, Kenny Roberts once said something like "Castle Rock is one of the only tracks where the fence surrounding the track protects the riders from the fans." Blatantly alluding to the free form style we cultivate here in the great North West.

Fun was the the name of the game, and the anthem heard over and over and over again last weekend at the first American Dirt Quake event, A race invented by Sideburn magazine to demystify the participation and spectating of flat track racing.

The idea was simple... Have a motorcycle? Come race. Come have fun. The puzzle pieces already existed so it was no challenge to assemble them. Mt. St. Helens Motorcycle Club maintaining the track and track workers, See See Motorcycles having a good handle of local riders interested in giving the track a try, and Sideburn Magazine providing some coverage and promotion.

A rare weekend of nice weather aided in the record setting turn out for a Sunday event. Pretty much most of the 5 acre lot was full up with campers, tents, cars, and bikes. Over 85 participants racing in 5 unconventional classes and 1 modern pro race, also including the very first dirt snowmobile race!

We had journalists from all over the world. Easyrider's lead photographer Michael Lichter was doing a story on the event. We used the hash tag #dqusa which collected over 975 photo posts that can be seen here. http://themotoattic.com/pages/dirtquake_gallery

All n' all it was a huge success. Everyone who came out had a memorable experience that will not be soon forgotten. Its all in part that your support helped us throw such an amazing event.

Thanks, first and foremost, to the Mt St Helens Motorcycle Club for their dedication to racing and keeping the Castle Rock track going year after year. Also all the dedicated folks that volunteer for scoring and helping with running the track.

Thanks to Sideburn Magazine and DTRA for their dedication to promoting flat track racing and the great idea.

Huge Thanks to Harley Davidson for many years of dirt track champions and helping us afford the track expenses. Also Columbia Harley Davidson for track support. See See Motorcycles for assembling the puzzle providing on the ground support promoting and organizing the event.

Thanks to:
The Moto Attic for hosting the swap meet.
Sizzle Pie for the drivable slice of pizza.
Poler for the camp gear and Koozies.
Stumptown for keeping us caffeinated.
Rainier Beer for the good times.
Throttled Films for documenting the whole thing. (coming soon)

Springfield Mile: Full Main Event

Thanks again to Roger F for pointing us to the good stuff.
This is a recording of the livestream from the recent Springfield Mile with its multiple restarts. It's a bit jumpy on my laptop, but it's still worth watching. G

Voice of the Mysterons

Growing up in Britain in the Sixties and early Seventies it was impossible to avoid the oft-repeated puppet-based TV series of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. The most famous is undoubtedly the earlier Thunderbirds, but my favourite was always the more 'realistic' and darker Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons from 1967-68. These opening titles set the tone of threat and menace. Parents must have been driven mad by kids badgering for replacement batteries for their torches after endless re-enactions of the spooky Mysteron light rings: 'Will you pack it in! I'm trying to watch It's a Knockout'. The one to talk to about this stuff is Dave Skooter Farm. MP
