Mama Tried Show Art

I went out to the first Mama Tried Show in February 2014 and was very impressed by the show, the people, the city of Milwaukee and the ice racing on Sunday morning. I had a great time. Put it on your must-visit list.

Now in it's third year, the organisers have relied on UK artists and Sideburn favourites, Adi Gilbert and Ryan Quickfall to create the promo poster for this year's event and the pre-party. And, to use the modern vernacular, they've killed it!

They're both guns for hire, waiting to design something for you. I'll even give you a link to go straight to their websites... G

Block Villa Wars

From former UK dirt track racer, Wayne Drake, who emigrated to New Zealand a few years ago...

Was watching an NZ TV programme, The Block Villa Wars (not my choice!). It's a home makeover show. Four couples get a house to do up and they auction them all at the end. They are judged weekly on each room makeover/challenge etc. The screengrab is of the host awarding points in studio. I spotted a poster I thought I recognized from a few years back and an awesome evening at Oxford.

Keep up the good work. Trying to get New Zealand flat track racing but no success yet.

Superhooligan!

Next Saturday in Vegas!
This will be the ultimate fistfight in a phone booth at the indoor arena at the Orleans Hotel, Las Vegas.

Friday night is the finale of the 2015 GNC series. Jared Mees has to be favourite to take the title. He's 7 points clear of Bryan Smith and has had better short track results for the last few years, but Smith's first ever national win was on a short track (though now he is the undisputed mile master - five wins this season, to Mees' one win). And anything can happen on a track like this.

Then on Saturday night is the first Superprestigio of the Americas. It's not attracting the calibre of names that the Spanish one has, and the support race was supposed to the the Roland Sands Designs/ Indian Motorcycles Superhooligan, but I think most people are going to be looking forward to the nuts on the modified street bikes more than the pros on the 450s.

Sideburn's own poet, Travis Newbold, is going to representing Sideburn on an 2015 Indian. It's going to be wild. Americans! Get out there if you can.

Inky

I did the Return to Del Mar for Brian (IVLFT) and Roland Sands poster last year and Brian kindly asked me to do the season poster for this year too. This new poster above, is for IV League Flat Track’s Season II. As well as the usual Flat Track categories there’s some Hooligan Racing, quads, moto-jousts etc. Hence the drawing features a pro bike, quad and street legal harley hooligan. Obviously a Dirt Quake influence to the shenanigans!

The original artwork drawing was done with indian ink and a fine sable brush for the most part with hatching done in pen.

Dirt Quake USA Entries: Last Call

Tomorrow is the last day to have your bike approved for entry Dirt Quake. There are some great entries, well, they're all great entries. Send a photo of your bike to dirt @ sideburnmagazine.com

We are currently travelling in the USA, with limited time to check the emails, so be patient, but as long as you get your approval in and then follow it up with payment when we've approved, you'll be in.

Racers: If you have already entered, your final instructions are coming soon (ish...)

Spectators: The weather forecast says it's going to be great, so come out and watch the regular flat track on Saturday; browse The Moto Attic swap meet and then stare, goggle-eyed, at the Dirt Quake mayhem on Sunday. The Vicious Cycles play on Saturday night. Camping is available.

Dirt Quake USA

We've hinted about it for a while, now here is the poster for Dirt Quake USA.
The event is over the weekend May 31- June 1, with flat track racing for regular racers on Saturday, beer and music Saturday night and all the Dirt Quake daftness, inappropriate road bikes and chopper dirt track on Sunday. We're doing it in conjunction with the good people at See See Motorcycles.
The race is the GNC track at Castle Rock, WA (an hour north of Portland).
More details to come, but it's going to be fun. G

Bristol Bike Show Snaps

Trikes and field-drag mono-bikes are pretty popular in Bristol.

There seem to be a lot of first generation Mods on immaculate Lambrettas.

And a few younger riders on chopped ones.

This XS650 has two 19" front wheels so it can run Maxxis DTR-1. Smart.

Rob organized a good expo inside the old Guild Hall with it's 17 courtrooms and now EU out-lawed jail cells in the basement. Here is the VonZeti family who make very tidy cafe racer tanks and seats.

And a great company car. I Love it when someone dares to use an old banger for all-weathers daily business.

As well as Sideburn merch I dug out some original Mean Fuckers photographs. Printed on defunct Hungarian made Forte Polywarmtone fibre paper. It's a strange thought how many hours I used to spend, back in the early '90s, underground like a mole, inhaling chemicals in the darkroom, dodging and burning to achieve the perfect print and now its just RSI-inducing computer work. Oily For A Day

In the middle of Bristol on sat 17th of Aug. I will be organising an exhibition of cool shit. 'OILY FOR A DAY' is an exhibition that runs in conjunction with the annual free Bristol Bike Show in the St Nicholas Market back-streets. There are a handful of very skilled artists that will be all gathered together in an old courtroom. Entrance is free but pleese feel free to throw some coins in a bucket for the Prince's Trust. Outside in the street there will be bands and hundreds of shiny bikes. Inside the only shiny paint will be on canvas.
Adi Gilbert will be exhibiting his work.

Tom Whiting will be there with his gritty photos of battles on the race track.

Ben Cheshire of Mesh - creator of mindbendingly cool screen prints will be there.

Ben Part- racer of Orange XS650 speedway chopper and Co-Founder of Sideburn will be there with very nice photos, SB merch' , his chop, and friendly up for most things attitude. [this photo Sam Christmas]

There will also be Cooper a local sign writer painting things infront of your very own eyeballs.

And of course I will be there, creator of the wierdest Triumph (with a blown head gasket)

and rider of a totally inappropriate Ducati race bike.

There is a dedicated Facebook page please share it on your blogs as well.
Make sure you are free on that day. Come and support a group of people that are getting of there arses and doing something just because it can be done.

Credence

'DIY moto and BMX tricks'. Sideburn has always stood for attitude over machinery. Sideburn #13 features a story on Clint Reynolds by French photographer and writer Vince Perraud. Adi 99 Seconds Gilbert, the Sideburn barometer on all things BMX, has this to say:
...it was really good to read a BMX / motorcycle crossover piece. A lot of my buddies that ride BMX and are picking up motorcycles have been getting into Sideburn and they've mentioned this piece. It's good to feel welcome. A good source of fresh blood for flat track I reckon.
+ Credence / Clint is pretty much flavour of the moment amongst trails / dirt riders, because he's got that new S&M frame out which is kick ass.

Bad News from Italy

This turned up on Instagram today, a follower in Italy pleased with their new T-shirt purchase contacted us from the Roma Moto Days Show.
Even on the screen of a phone it looked familiar. Yes, it's the Adi Gilbert illustration for the Sideburn Dave Aldana night from 2011.

THIS T-SHIRT WAS PRINTED AND SOLD IN ITALY. CAN ANYONE TELL US WHO MADE IT OR GIVE US A FACEBOOK OR WEBSITE LINK TO THEM, PLEASE?

Before you think, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, here's the truth.

We ALWAYS pay the artist for the artwork, not just promise to raise their profile.

In the case of Dave Aldana we also paid towards bringing the legendary racer to the UK in an effort to raise the profile of the UK flat track scene.

When companies rip Sideburn off, they're ripping of two guys who make a magazine in their spare time, because this niche title doesn't pay enough to support us full-time (and never will). So we work on it when the kids go to bed.

This is the third time it's happened in four months.

People are stealing our designs and artists' work and it's pissing us right off. Please help us find these rip-off merchants. G
