It's a long time since I called by the HWZNBRoss blog, but a few images on the @yace instagram feed reminded me to reacquaint myself. These great shots were up there (copyright: HWZNBross).
We featured the Japanese company and their heavily modified 45s in Sideburn 10. You can buy the issue as an individual or as part of a 4 magazine back issue deal. 400 pages for just £10 plus postage.
HWZNBross are heavily involved with the Chirihama Sand Flats Speedway beach drag race, that features in the brand new issue, Sideburn 23. G

Vintage Grasstrack (is the new rock 'n' roll)
Lewis Wharton wrote about his dad's grasstrack racing career for Sideburn 10. He has now set up his own blog entitled Vintage Grasstrack.
Lewis is also bassist in the band Little Barrie. This is them below. This great, no-budget video (to a killer song) was shot by filmmaker and photographer, Lee Vincent Grubb who came along to Anthony Co-Built's birthday dirt track party, last week, and was blown away by his first encounter with flat track.
Apparently, the lady in the video, Mareva Galanter, is a former Miss France and also in the band Nouvelle Vague. Get the circles (ovals?) we're moving in! G

Sideburn Award Verona
We were honored to be asked to nominate a 'Sideburn Award' for the bike of our choice out of the zillion on show at this years Verona Motorbike Expo. Choosing a top 10 was fairly easy, but it was a close shave to the wining post. Danny Hard 9's sparkly Cub pipped it - now featured in SB#10

Beat Combo

We've been mentioning Lewis from the band Little Barrie a bit on the blog because he's supplied a brilliant and very personal feature about vintage grasstrack for Sideburn 10. The band has just been touring the US. Flat track racer and SB contributor Greaser Mike went to see Little Barrie in NY.When Lewis got back off tour he sent us these photos and this message (he said he doesn't look himself in the top photo. He hadn't recovered from the tour yet...). G
The background to the bike is....a good friend of my dad's Kenny White passed away this year, he had keep it in his garage since the 70s (this is an early 70s outfit). His daughter gave it to his old passenger John Smith. All their old grasstrack crowd met at the funeral and it ended up at my dad's garage to be restored. They are all itching to have a go on it. I haven't seen one of these kind of outfits in the flesh since I was 2 yrs old! And very much doubt there are very many around...I know Gerry Wheeler, one of the top riders of his day still does a lap or two on his at big events for show, that's the only other one I know of.
Tour went really well thanks, although I was a broken man by the time I got back. Thanks for hooking us up with Mike Kramer.

Northern Soul
No stories yet on sand racing in Dubai, or ice racing in Antarctica, but we are covering a lot of territory. SB#10 has a story on chopper speedway in Finland. Photos by Finn Mikko Toiviainen, words by Mancunian globetrotter Dan Walsh. If you are still wondering what the hell defines Sideburn? It's more about attitude. We don't care if you wear leather or lace.
"It's not what you ride, but how you ride it" is core. If your bike has knobblies or high bars, you're probably half way there. BP

Lewis Wharton Jnr.
Ford Capris, Bay City Rollers barnets, chunky cork soled sandals, nostalgia is everything. I also love that crystal ball thing, whereby you can look at this old photo and know what that little baby doesn't - He can't yet wipe his own arse, but he will be come a bassist in a rock'n'roll band, he will (have no choice but to) love motorbikes. And in 37 years time, he will write an article about his Dad's antics as a grass-track side-car monkey for a motorcycle magazine called Sideburn. His band is called Little Barrie. They have a new album out in the here and now, today. It's called King of the Waves. They're playing at Bowery Electric in New York tonight. BP
UPDATE: You can see a special recording of Little Barrie playing live on Breakthru Radio. It's good. G

I'm trying

I did an email interview with Dutch for his website The Bike Shed. He wanted some photos so I dug out this one from Stoke a couple of years ago. My body position isn't ideal: sat too square on the seat, throttle elbow much too low, but I like it because I look like I trying. I do try, all the time, but sometimes I don't look like I am in photos.
I love this bike, my Wood Rotax. That's why I'm not buying a twin shock scrambler, I have one of the greatest twin shock dirt trackers ever built (according to Chris Carr in an interview in SB10). GPhoto: I'm pretty sure Dan or Hayley took this photo.

This is Carl and Frankie from CFM taking our Enfield for its first ever trial run yesterday. Converting it from EFi was tricky and the Enfield had another trick up its sleeve that had Carl scratching his head. Big thanks to Rupe and Josh and the guys at Enfield specialisits Hitchcocks. Biggest thanks of all to CFM. Legends.Read all about the bike in Sideburn 10, out in March. G

Second Swiss Cub
Following on from his 'Bird Reynolds' Triumph Tiger Cub we featured in Sideburn #8, Danny Hard9 has now had another Cub. As intrigued as we were by the last story, we thought we better put our best dick on it, and so sent Special Agent Arnold on a chilly Euro road trip, to Bern in Switzerland, to get the inside story. It certainly was a journey of enlightenment - if well over budget. You'll just have to wait for SB#10 to read it. BP

CFH x Lowbrow

One of Sideburn's favourite artists continues to work with one of Sideburn's favourite companies. Chief Corpse from Hell, Maxwell P, has produced a bunch of artwork that Lowbrow Customs have printed onto their cardboard packaging. What a great idea. Lowbrow do things properly. We want to try set up a small event type thing up with them in the UK this year. We'll let you know if we get it off the ground. Also, Maxwell has done some art for Sideburn 10. Out in March. G

American Supercamp
From Garrett B in Colorado'Too tired and sore to even think at this point, so I'll give more details later, but check this out:
I wore my Dick Mann shirt on the last day of Supercamp. Chris Carr says, "Nice Sideburn shirt! Look at this!" This man is amazing to watch and learn from.'
That's an old Sideburn shirt, by the way.
We have a great interview with Chris coming up in SB10. G
