Skijoring Freaks

This came in from Karl in Austria, reacting to a post from last week.

The video from 1953 in Tyrol is great. 

I am from Upper-Austria. Skijöring has been very popular all around our area till the beginning of the 1970s. Safety was not that much in the forefront. It was more or less all about speed and giving gas. More and more laws and terms by the government, uncomprehending neighbours and also a lack of snow made it pretty difficult and expelled the Skijöring freaks. 
That's a really big pity. I have sent pictures of Skijöring in my area.

Yes, these plucky fun-seekers are so keen to be in top form for Snow Quake that they wangled a trip back to the Tyrol in 1953 to practise. Note 1: there is no skiing class for Snow Quake. Note 2: but we are talking Snow Quake. MP

This is a DUCATI 98ccm from 1968, about 10 horsepower. 
It was built for Speedway - Junior races in the sixties. I hope its interesting for you. 

I'm the owner of the photos my father made this bike for me as I was about 12 years old. The photo they are a from Voecklabruck / Austria.

The Surgeon's Bike

I like your magazine and the bikes in it very much. I found Sideburn while I did some research about customizing bikes, because I wanted to built my own bike from my XS650. 
It is my first project and the maybe interesting point is that I'm not a mechanic, but a surgeon at a hospital for emergency and trauma surgery in Salzburg, Austria. 

I proudly present you my "KNOBBLER-XS". I hope you like it.

We have several motorcycle enthusiast in our hospital (not so many surgeons, but the cook, mechanics, house-maintaining, etc.). In September we were at the Lake Garda in the north of Italy. I rode my Sporty, not the XS. Next project will be a dirt bike style XS, I have one more in my garage...

Austrian Mile Update

In better weather

From Jan-Willem from Dutch Bros, the hardest of hardcore.

'Unfortunately it snowed over night (when we were travelling) which didn't allow us to ride the big track at speed. The soil was nice and hard so the tractor tried to brush a clean path, but the mix of snow and dirt was too slippery. We did about 10 laps during our first outing and came back in. Mario was travelling pretty sideways along the straight, and with no safety precautions along the barriers I decided to call it a day.
The length of the straight and the corner radius felt just right in proportion and we are very anxious to try again in good conditions. So it will be a long wait until this summer! Our visit allowed us to meet Mr. Franye who is aiming to put together a real big event for us! We hope that every rider will consider the long trip to Vienna this summer. Not only to get a chance to ride a mile, but also to be part of European flat track history!
The plan is to combine the meeting with a race on the short track in Heidenreichstein, about 160km away. Adventure is calling!'
