DuQuoin Mile: Watch This Race

We can't embed the AMA Pro Racing videos here any more, you have to go to the FansChoice.tv website, but I urge you to go check out this race from Saturday night, in DuQuoin, Illinois. There's quite a lot of build up before the beginning that you can skip if you're in a hurry, but if you have time, listen to Chris Carr's expert punditry.

Of the 18 starters, there are 9 Kawasaki, 5 Harley, 2 Triumph, 1 Ducati, 1 KTM.

There's a red flag just under midway. The two sections either side of the stoppage are very different, but both hugely entertaining.

DuQuoin Indoor Short Track

The Springfield TT and Mile is this weekend and we found these AMA Pro Racing photos we hadn't posted to whet your appetites. This is Jake Johnson in his Troy Lee pyjamas.
Indoor short track rules. This is DuQuoin all prepped for the race on April 16, earlier this year.
Nicole Cheza seems to do better on the big tracks. She didn't make the main at DuQuoin.

Jared Mees leads Jake Johnson. Jake came third in the main, J-Rod fourth.
Sammy Halbert and Johnny Leiws. This looks like a battle. Sammy was 5th, Johnny 8th.

Coolbeth wins DuQuoin

Kawasaki-mounted Kenny Coolbeth won the DuQuoin short track. Chris Carr, in his last full season as a rider, came second, Jake Johnson, current GNC #1, was third. Sammy Halbert was fifth, behind Jared Mees, and still leads the championship.

Relics: Bob at Du Quoin

Bobby Russell was/is a pretty fast guy, never had a lot of money when he was young, but he could ride a motorcycle. After the flattrack years he got into desert racing and was a stud, he befriended 4 time AMA National Hare & Hound champ Destry Abbott when Destry was just coming up and taught him a couple of things about going fast.
He got hurt pretty bad a few years back (broke his back and was paralyzed for a while) and swore he would never ride again. He had just bought some new riding gear before he got hurt and he told his wife to get rid of it as he wouldn't be needing it, she replied "don't you want to keep it in case you want to go out and putt around?". He responded very bluntly "I don't putt". I knew at that moment he would ride again :-)
