Flashback: Rollerburn

Back in 2011 Sideburn and some friends came up with an idea for a bike show that incorporated riding, all different kids of custom bikes, stalls, live music and roller derby.

It was the kickstart for a lot of the current UK 'shed built' scene, like the Bike Shed shows.

This advert was made by Drogo Michie, who later joined the DTRA as Thunderbike racer on his own, very smart Co-Built Rotax.

Guy Martin came, so did Charlie Chuck (Uncle Peter) and I joined them for a Rollerball race at the end. It was as sketchy as hell. G

"Bloody great" (according to Rob) Sideburn Rollerburn sticker - each letter is individually laser cut-out on a backing paper, so sticking them on curved surfaces is easy. BP

Robert Dancel

This is Robert Dancel in his original Tokyo T-Shirt and his new Davida Tokyo Helmet.
Following Sideburn’s Rollerburn last year, we sent a Davida Tokyo helmet to Robert Dancel, one of the original actors in the 1975 cult movie Rollberball. A professional skater in real life, Robert was hired for the film alongside other team mates from the Canadian Roller Derby Association. He gained celebrity status amongst Rollerball Aficionados as the Tokyo player who took out Houston’s ‘Moonpie’ and was then subsequently killed by the Houston Team Captain ( James Caan).

Merinero Pinball

Spanish artist, Antonio Merinero made one of his wonderful pinball artworks for Rollerburn, then put it up for sale. Martin made the last payment so he could collect it from Sideburn HQ. He was very happy. G

Men's File Pop-Up

Nick Clements, the creative dynamo behind Men's File magazine, opened a pop-up shop for just two weeks in London's Lamb's Conduit Street, from Monday of this week. It's showcasing a bunch of stylish clobber his magazine promotes and also selling the newly printed Men's File 6.
It's another great issue with loads of our friends and connections and satellites from the Sideburn universe inside (Hiro from Lewis Leathers, Toshi, Nick Ashley, Dimitri Coste, Hotrod Hayride, Goodwood, Maurice (the Flying Dutchman), the Vintagent..). I have written a short feature on Johnny Alpha for the magazine, with great portraits by my mate Paul Bryant, and there's a spread of Nick's own photos from Rollerburn.

For Sale: Pinball By Merinero

The mighty Antonio Merinero made one of his incredible 3D pinball artworks to show at Rollerburn. The art is now for sale. It's up for €1000. The artwork is about 4ft high (1.3m).

Conrad's Rollerburn Ramp Art Auction: One week to go

I caught up with Conrad Leach today and he reminded me there's one week to go for the secret auction of his Rollerburn ramp art.

You are bidding on the panels that make up an 8ft x 8ft artwork. You don't get the ramp too. Conrad's canvases go for up to £15,000 and nothing he's ever done is this big. He said it's still 'affordable'.
Surely one of those tasty motorcycle-themes boutique would want this? Who wouldn't want it?

Rollerburn: The Documentary

Well, here it is. Lots of people who couldn't make the day asked for a film of it and, thanks to Hayley and Dan of Patteran, here is 13 hours of Rollerburn day distilled to an intoxicating 7.5 minutes - from set-up to the final encore. Thanks again to everyone who made it such a blast.

Davida Rollerburn Helmets Now Available

Davida has had a long association with Sideburn Magazine, so when they came up with the out-there concept that was Rollerburn it was almost a given that Davida would get involved, particularly given the nature of the beast. Rollerburn loosely combined roller derby, motorbikes (mainly custom, classic and flat-track), skaters, live music and motorcycle artwork.

The main highlight of the Rollerburn event took its inspiration from the classic 1975 genre-film Rollerball starring James Caan as a fierce, fight-to-the-death competitor for the Houston Team, fighting for freedom, in a violent sport against teams from New York, Tokyo and Madrid.

The main event at Rollerburn featured TT Hero Guy Martin, Sideburn’s Gary Inman and comedian Charlie Chuck recreating the films iconic game where motorbikes dragged fearless skaters around a track. Rollerburn created the perfect platform to display the skill, enthusiasm and commitment of two British motorcycling companies, with riders dragging tattooed skating vixens on specially produced Flat Track race bikes supplied by Co-Built and wearing Davida helmets created in each of the teams designs from the original film. Classic British attitude at its best. Amen. DAVIDA

Signed Rollerburn posters

A few people are asking if they can get Rollerburn posters. Well, the artist who created, Adi Gilbert of 99Seconds, is selling signed, hand-screened versions.
Baz in Glasgow bought one and had it framed (pictured). Lovely job. Deal with Adi directly.
Adi also drew our Aldana night and race artwork and has that for sale too. G

The Guy Martin/Kriega Award

Rollerburn's custom show was more of a showcase of the bikes we love (whether they'd 'fit' in the magazine or not). No one expected to win a prize, because we didn't have any, but a lot of great bikes turned up from all over the country. In the end, we decided to let Guy Martin choose one bike as his favourite and give the owner a R20 rucksack donated by our sponsors, Kriega. It was a tough decision and Guy worked out which he preferred while talking on stage. The winner was Paul from Yorkshire. Wristband

An email arrived yesterday. The subject was 'It's Wednesday'. All it said - 'Time to make the break'.
I replied, with 'Is this Spam'. Then this came in to explain it all.
'No, it's a pic of my wristband that I had to take off. I felt like a teenager that had been to Glastonbury who wanders around all summer and into next winter with their wristband on so it came off last night.' Grant

Another Grant got in touch, the photographer Grant Robinson with these shots, below, of the night. He wrote, simply, 'What a night. Thanks for organising it.' G

This panel is being auctioned to raise money for the EllenorLions Hospice in Kent.

Conrad's 17 year old nephew spent his last few weeks at this Hospice and lost his battle to beat cancer on 20th October 2011.
This Hospice is one of the few that welcomes young people.

Rollerburn Blur

2 minutes in and Stevie Gee has already stabbed himself with a scalpel. He was obviously in pain but seemed to more worried about the blood on his Converse. Apart from a bloodied rollergurl thigh from a drag-race crash, there were no other injuries. It was destined to be an 'interesting' evening.
The bike show selection was great, but sadly I didn't have enough time to give each of them the licking - or even photographing they deserved. There's a ton of nice snaps HERE. BP
