Coste Contemplation

Sideburn first met Dimitri when Ben, Steve Redmax and I went over to Paris to visit Ruby Helmets, not long after they'd just launched, and attend a local bike club meet (that turned out to be crap, but we became good friends with Sonic Seb through it).

Dimitri visited the offices of Ruby (his brother is the founder) and we got along so well he invited us to lunch at his house the next day. He had just bought a Triumph TR6C that wasn't running right. Steve Redmax tuned it up and made it fly and Ben shot a feature for Sideburn 5 there and then, perhaps the first on Dimitri Coste and his motorcycle passion.

Since then we've raced together, and the 'French Steve McQueen' has contributed a number of stories and attended all the UK Dirt Quakes, plus become a regular DTRA racer, and raced all over the world.

First and foremost, he's a great photographer and, for Sideburn 20, we have an eight-page portfolio on some of his favourite recent images.

Here's the story behind this short film from Dimitri...

I wanted to share with you the result of a nice day of riding in Normandy back in june. I've been asked by Herve Coutin the editor of the independent magazine "Bad To The Bone" to shoot a fashion story for its latest issue. he wanted off road riding and a vintage motorcycle. 

Fabrice Bazire, let me ride his beautiful Monark 500 GP for the day, and like every time I ride this Swedish beauty I had an amazing time. Herve Coutin shot in black & white film for the 10 page story. 

The day before, I was working on the edit of a short video with the tiny amount of footage I had from my JMB photoshoot, and Julien Faucher, the editor I was working on asked me if I could call him next time i go riding because he was interested into filming motorcycling. I then realized that i had to ride the following day. 

I gave him a ride to Normandy, he shot what he could while Herve was snapping photos, and he came back to me today with this cool video. I hope you like it even if there isn't any sideways action. just casual riding in the fields of Normandy.

March 13 is Dimitri Coste Day. Pt. 2

 

The French website Husz.fr has published Dimitri's 2013 race diary. Last year saw the Frenchman compete on short circuits, flat track, Vintage MX and drags (organised and outlaw). He used a mixture of British, American and European singles and twins in France, England and the USA. And wearing a different Ruby helmet nearly every time, it seems.

SLACKER: A short report

A long time ago we spoke to London artist Stevie Gee about doing a wide-ranging project together. We thought we'd build a bike, put it on the cover, make related stickers and T-shirts, and he'd create ton of artwork, then we'd make a show and invite everyone who wanted to come.
Last night saw the last box ticked.

Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen - CFM for building the bike; Sam Christmas for shooting the cover (and these photos); Vans for sponsoring the show so we could pay the extortionate rent on the East London space; Ruby for the helmets; Kraken for the rum cocktails; Brewdog for the Punk IPA; Dave T for DJing and everyone else who helped or came along.

The show and pop-up shop is open daily until Tuesday 10 December midday. There are prints and original artworks for sale, limited edition T-shirts, magazines, art books and other stocking filler stuff from just £3.50. Either Stevie or one of Sideburn will be there.

Miguel Jamon

AKA Dimitri Coste is a mad mo fo. He missed two flights on the way to Spain. When he turned up in his Lee denim jacket and white Wrangler Rodeo jeans, Kenny Noyes said "where's your riding gear?" - "this is it!" Dimitri responded. 10 minutes after getting on to the track (a day and a half late) he was crashing prostrate into me. Dimitri is a flyer. Dimitri doesn't stop - except to grab a bite to eat (here in Barcelona airport on the way home) - or to pick up trophies. BP

Sideburn 15 Launch Party

Sideburn 15 is with us and being sent out now, but the official launch of the mag is in East London on Thursday 5 December.

The launch party is seamlessly intertwined with a brand new solo art exhibition by Stevie Gee. 

Never peeped before art, customised weapons and the Stevie Gee x Sideburn Z200 cover bike (built by the mighty CFM) - pore over the details of this mini-meisterwerk. Plus music, booze, limited edition swag to buy, interesting people saying daft things, prizes to be won...

The event takes place at the Old Truman Brewery, just off Brick Lane with the venue then becoming a pop-up art gallery/shop until Tuesday. Yeah, a Stevie Gee/Sideburn pop-up shop in the best city on Earth. Whatever next?

We plan to have some other events going on in the shop so keep them peeled. G

Ruby Animal Prints

Debuted by Dimitri Coste at Dirt Quake II , back in June, (see photos below by Götz Goppert) the animal prints are finally on the market. The black on black is probably my favourite Ruby design ever... G

DTRA First Practice: The French Connection

Frank Chatokhine (above and below) came over from France to try flat track for the very first time. He was going well (and looking the business) on his 500cc Metisse T100 (on 19s with Maxxis DT1s). He'll be back.

Dimitri Coste came over on his BSA to try it on a dry track. It was quick. And loud. He removed the silencer because he thought it was acting as a megaphone.

There were a few slide offs. 

The one and only pre-season test took place at Rye House yesterday and it was great to see a bunch of new faces (and plenty of old ones).
The UK Short Track scene has had a few changes behind the scenes and the new organisers, the DTRA have chased a different crop of sponsors and are being supported by Edwin jeans, Deus Ex Machina, FTWCo, Sideburn and Ruby helmets.
Ruby brought over a French delegation of four riders, three on Brit iron and Ruby boss, Jerome, on a KTM DTX bike rented from Peter Boast. They've got the bug.

NOTE 1. UK racers - you MUST get your entries in by this Friday or you won't be able to race at the first round, at King's Lynn. There are no exceptions.

NOTE 2/ UK spectators - The first round of the series is at King's Lynn. See the poster below and the DTRA website for more details. Entry is £5 for adults, under-16s are free.

Sideburn x Ruby x Ornamental Conifer

I was slightly envious of Ben's Lagoon blue Castel (with it's special Sideburn branding on the goggle strap, that mine didn't have), until I collected mine back from Ornamental Conifer. Nico did a great asymmetrical job of the Ruby Castel full-face at a very reasonable price.
It's pink and pale blue, with black and 23ct gold leaf arrow, lightning flash and numbers. No lacquer so it will age, gracefully. If you want anything painting, get in touch with O.C. through his site. He does this for a living, but you get what you get given. He's not for steering, and he doesn't like doing the same on either side 'It's boring'.
