Vote Drake

This is Drake McElroy, Sideburn 20 cover star, freestyle MX pioneer, Smoking Seagull, the greatest travel show presenter in history and friend of our mag.

He's in some kind of video competition with other freestyle stars on the X Games website. This is a screengrab from his entry, because we can't embed it. So it doesn't matter how many times you click the little arrow on the naked FMX dude, it won't play on our blog, you have to go to X Games Drake McElroy

Please go and watch it, then vote for it. You don't have to sign up, or be on facebook or any of that crap. And it's a fun video (but you got that idea, right?).

Read Drake's own writing about his cafe racer/supermoto/dirt track Honda CRF450 in Sideburn 20.

UPDATE: I just noticed he has a Sideburn rub-on sticker on the clocks of this bike. G

Manga Smoking Seagulls

Thanks to Adriaan for sending this Manga version of a shot we ran in Sideburn 5 of the Smoking Seagulls in Sideburn 5 (limited stock available).
The photo shows freestyle motocorsser, Red Bull X Fighters jump, artist, musician and all-round good guy Drake McElroy (who made the most memorable travel programme I've ever seen, Drake's Passage - see one episode, below then search it on YouTube) and regular Sideburn feature chap, Roland Sands jumping their cafe racered MX bikes. See See Motorcycles

Thor Drake is our kind of man. Racer, bike and art show organiser, custom bike builder and now bike shop/coffee shop owner. He's a do-er. He's also a Smoking Seagull and soon to be stockist of Sideburn magazine. What a diamond.
This is his shop in Portland, Oregon (a place I've got to visit soon). That's the most 'prog' coffee machine I've ever seen.
Go to See See Motorcycles and buy a Sideburn with you morning go-go juice. G

Every time I visit Roland Sands' blog I remember why I like him so much. He has a range of clothing out now - Roland Sands Apparel. G

21 Helmets

From Thor Drake (one of the Smoking Seagulls), another fun thing going on in Portland...

Hey fellas...
here is a little thing I'm putting together at my new shop. i ordered 21 white Bell Custom 500's and gave them to a wide array of weirdo artists that i know. It worked out almost perfectly because im moving my shop into a bigger building in a much better location so we had the space. PBR is always pretty hyped to help us out so i got a bunch of free beer. The new shop is going to be equel parts coffee shop/ motorcycle shop. During the show we will be serving up latte's and espresso's from Stumptown's finest. Im pretty excited to see what comes out of it
let's chat soon,
cheers, Thor

2010 555

From Travis in Portland...

i *ucking love your guys' style. Thanks for the tip on Johnny Alpha, he plays the best music to ride to. Anyways me and some mates are doing this trip called the 555.
Older than 1975, under 500cc and under 500 bucks. Last year we made it all the way to the east coast from Portland, Oregon. heres the link from last year's trip
motonw.com trip.
Heres the one for this year's trip. It's a little different however. we are flying into detroit with out any bikes bought yet and trying to ride them home. gonna be awesome.
it would be cool if you could post a link for our blog this year. we will be updating daily about how many plugs fouled and fuses blown! (see one rider's toolkit above. Love the Famous Grouse.)
2010 555
Cheers, keep up the awesome mag! -Travis

The Mighty Thor

Is he sick of that? Probably, but look at him flying on that 1969 budget Bultaco Matador. Thor Drake's been racing. He nearly killed his bike, but he won. He's a Smoking Seagull living up to his name. His fellow Seagulls will be proud. GI

Scribbletastic

Roland Sands' Honda CR500 stroker featured in SB#5 is unpainted ally and just has '500' scribbled on the tail with a Sharpie. The headlight-shroud is resplendent with a doodle that any numbskull stoner could have done. These excellent American marker pens are now readily available in Britain; W.H.Smiths does a rainbow 12-pack for £6.50. Roland prefers black. BP

Who is Thor Drake?

Well, we don't know the full answer, but we know he races budget vintage MX in the NW of the USA, because we posted this film of his. We know he organises shows up there too. And we know he's a Smoking Seagull, because he's in issue 5 of Sideburn with this cafe racered XR400 and his fellow Seagull brothers. His blog is great too.
Who is Thor? Don't know for sure, but he's definitely on our wavelength? GI

Danker's Dirt Dog

Danker from Portland sends us stuff that turn into some of my favourite links. He's even got his own green label, below.
Why? He send us stuff like this video of budget vintage MX in the Pacific North West. The film was made, I think, by Thor Drake, one of the Smoking Seagulls who are about to be featured in SB5. Below is Danker's dirt dog.
Want to buy a Sideburn sticker like the one on Danker's tank for your beloved? We have red only. Click here

Smoking Seagulls

For any who have just joined us, I'd just like to hark on about printed magazines for second if I may...
Sideburn magazine is to have and to hold. We'd also like to think of it as a compendium you can keep re-re-reading until it falls apart. It's quality build and print should certainly mean it will outlast the life-span of your lap-top. Of course we couldn't (now) live without the internet - and Sideburn would not have been created without it, but all too often one comes across a story; or even just a single photo and then you forget where the hell you found it. Here today, gone tomorrow. And then you can't sleep for want of information.

Smoking Seagulls, is a story originally brought to light by our NY pals Hell For Leather. When Google or 'know it all' (not) Wikipedia doesn't deliver the extended thesis you were hoping for, there's only one choice left... Good old fashioned, lick your pencil, journalism. A man; or a woman; or an effeminate man, and a note pad. Wes Siler is our man, and he's written the full story for SB#5. Photos by Rich Van Every and Chris Hornbecker. BP
