Redmax HBC Indian Scout

 This in from Steve Redmax...

HBC Motorcycles in Nottingham commissioned the build from us and did the paint at the end. There is a dealer comp going for Scout specials and they will all be displayed at the NEC next week . It has a Trask pipe 2 into 1 ceramic black . All the fabrication done in house at Redmax mainly by Glenn who also did the seat pad.

We made a Dummy Alloy C&J-style XR tank shell from one of our tanks and XR alloy seat unit (both Redmax products). Under seat is a new subframe relocating the shocks to a more upright position and containing the actual fuel tank. Seat dzus fastens on and uncovers the fuel cap under the hump. Redmax alloy race numberboards front n sides and Tarrozi rearsets fitted on Redmax hangers that re-located the foot pegs back to a useable position and mount brake reservoirs at same time ...

Redmax Flanders style black bars changed the look straight away , but the 19" spoked wheels really made a difference as i had 'reservations' about the fat standard ones. She flies straight as an arrow now ! We really like how the bike rides, very streetable and the motor has plenty of poke and revs away below, while the revised seating position make it able the hustle in the bends very well . We like it and feel it's a real feather in our cap to have made one so early on .... excuse all the puns mate , but we did enjoy this one!

Norton Bultaco Firewater

Steve RedMax built 'The Reverend' for short track racing in the UK. There are are far easier ways to go about preparing a vehicle for such a task, but Steve would never walk that line. He likes his firewater.
"I’d bought a Knight Bultaco [to sell on] that someone had bought in the States to race grasstrack in the UK. It was a lovely bit of kit, but no one was interested in buying it. That’s when the tape measure came out. I worked out I could get the Commando engine out of my café racer into it with half an inch to spare.’

Oh yeah, the engine would fit in, but the gearbox wouldn’t. That didn’t stop Steve though. ‘I thought I could use a speedway bike’s cross-shaft,’ he explains. Speedway bikes have one gear, permanently engaged. Steve ended up linking the NEB cross-shaft to the output sprocket with a super-short primary chain. ‘The clutch is old-fashioned with new tech. It has five or six weird looking 3mm thick clutch plates in an alloy clutch basket.’ Next, he rebuilt and tuned the parallel twin. ‘I changed the bearings; bored it out to 920cc; fitted a 4S cam, the genuine Norton Norvil racing cam; new valves and springs… It revved like a two-stroke even when it had the standard cam. I also fitted a Norvil two-into-one intake manifold because two carbs wouldn’t fit. A Mikuni flatslide is mounted on it."

Coste Contemplation

Sideburn first met Dimitri when Ben, Steve Redmax and I went over to Paris to visit Ruby Helmets, not long after they'd just launched, and attend a local bike club meet (that turned out to be crap, but we became good friends with Sonic Seb through it).
Dimitri visited the offices of Ruby (his brother is the founder) and we got along so well he invited us to lunch at his house the next day. He had just bought a Triumph TR6C that wasn't running right. Steve Redmax tuned it up and made it fly and Ben shot a feature for Sideburn 5 there and then, perhaps the first on Dimitri Coste and his motorcycle passion.
Since then we've raced together, and the 'French Steve McQueen' has contributed a number of stories and attended all the UK Dirt Quakes, plus become a regular DTRA racer, and raced all over the world.
First and foremost, he's a great photographer and, for Sideburn 20, we have an eight-page portfolio on some of his favourite recent images.
If you want to see that first feature on Dimitri and his Triumph, you can read it in Sideburn 5. We have a very limited amount of this issue in our Back Issue Deal.
There is also a feature on Dimitri racing Pikes Peak in Sideburn 10 (available individually or as part of the back issue deal)

Above is a short video made at Dirt Quake III in 2014, featuring his two children. G

UK DTX bike for Sale

We've had a few people asking us if there are dirt track race bikes for sale in the UK. We're happy to promote race bikes for sale on the blog, but only bikes in the UK and Europe. The US has it covered with VFT.org and other sites.
We'll promote bikes for free BUT full-size dirt track bikes only. Not pit bikes, not mini bikes, not road bikes, not unconverted MX bikes. Email us with photos and details to dirt @ sideburnmagazine.com

This is a Yam 450 on 19s Redmax is selling for £1450.
We don't know anything about the bike or its condition, and we're not on commission, we're just trying to put riders on race bikes and into the DTRA.

Classic TT Formula 1 snaps

There aren't many places in the world I like more than the Isle of Man when the sun is shining. These are my phone snaps of bikes lining up for the inaugural Classic TT Formula One race, last Monday.
Our mate and fellow DTRA racer, Paul Baleta has been racing the Manx for seven years. This year he also competed in the Classic TT Formula 1 race and was third privateer! Amazing result. He was also 14th out of 29 in total in the race that was won by multiple TT winner Michael Dunlop. Paul's average race speed for the 4-lap race was close to 106mph average and he won a Silver Replica.
His pit crew was his girlfriend and his brother.
Redmaxspeedshop rebuilt the 888 motor that finished the gruelling race. Redmax boss, Steve Hillary is a Ducati 8-valve expert.
Paul was also 19th out of 44 in the Supertwin Manx GP on a Suzuki SV650. He had an Aprilia Mille to compete in the Senior too, but the race was abandoned due to poor weather.
Massive respect!
Read more about Paul's racing antics at his Speed Therapy blog
My favourite bike to line up. Reno, Nevada resident Jimmy Mac borrowed this Bakker-framed Z1000 from a mate of his and came to race. He was smiling and not showing his nerves as we chatted in the holding area. He did admit that he felt he'd bitten off more than he could chew. 'This is not my niche'.
The Trident Engineering XR69-style Suzuki team took advantage of the slack rules to fit GSX-R1100/Bandit 1200 motors, instead of the GSX 8-valve based motors they are forced to use in normal classic racing. They also fitted 17s not the usual 18s.
This is Conor Cummins' bike. The team had the seat off with about 5 mins to go, hence the tape all over the seat pad.
Conor (below) came in second, lapping at 120-plus mph on the steel-framed GSX-R1100 on treaded tyres!
This bike, and the winner's Suzuki, were both fitted with Racefit Ti Legend pipes.
As long as his Suzuki kept running there was never any doubt Michael Dunlop was going to win this race. He was doing 125mph practice laps and, he admitted, just taking it easy.  In the end his fastest race lap was 123.6 and he won at a canter.
GPz.
I love oil-cooled GSX-Rs and there were plenty here. Cheap race bikes (comparatively).
Among the TT winners and professional looking teams there was this Guzzi and pit crew in sombreros. The TT has become so fast and professional you don't see much of this at the TT any more. There's still room for it at the Manx/Classic though. Rider Rob Paget was final finisher, in 29th place. Doesn't sound impressive, but the amount of bikes that don't make the finish would fill a ferry. This team did a great job with the only Guzzi in the race.
TT frontrunner (and winner) Gary Johnson was racing this wonderful Yamaha FJ1200 Harris. Didn't finish though.
 German Kenny Hinck. ZXR750RR
Russ from Blackheart Racing was over with a big crew of Americans. Couldn't find his RC30 on the results sheet and left before I had chance to catch up with him.
Harris XR69 replica. Orange bib denotes newcomer.
Two eras in one photo. The Classic TT was a great event. G
