Texas Chris Jenner

Back in May we organised a Yorkshire Ride Out with HebTroCo. Among a bunch of great bikes was a very neat very neat, street trackered XS650 built by and belonging to 'Texas' Chris Jenner and American living in the UK. Nothing particularly unusual, there were a few good looking street trackers among the mix. What was interesting was I knew Chris was heading to dirt track practice at Greenfield the next day on the very same bike.

Chris is a graduate of the University of Dirt Quake, yet another rider who has undertaken their first motorcycle race at Dirt Quake, only to be seduced by the action and atmosphere and then bought or built a bike to race more seriously.

Chris took off the front brake and light overnight in preparation for the practice. These aircooled Yamaha twins are solid machines, but it didn't stop Chris, a BMX rider, launching it off the Greenfield TT jump and even crossing it up in mid-air, looking like a 21st Century Kenny Roberts. The DTRA Greenfield TT is on this weekend. Spectator entry is free, but car parking is £5. There is a bar on site, camping, and two days of racing.

Bought it standard off a guy at work for £50, hacked it up one evening and unseized it with a block of wood and a hammer and this is the result! 
It's slow as shit at the minute, needs a rebore and pistons I think, my mate on the Bullet had to push me along at anything over 45! 
Worked well on the beach though...

Scunthorpe Road Bike Dirt Track Racing

Dirt Quake racer Jon Lawson has helped organise a class for road bikes to race at Scunthorpe speedway at their dirt track/amateur speedway meetings this year. First one is February 28.
Here are the details Jon sent us... 

Road Bike Class 
Road bike based, we would like as near to what they looked like as they left factory but not strictly necessary. 
NO GLASS  or mirrors but can be taped up very well if ridden to the track. 
Plastic lights taped up  
Centre stand removed 
Ignition cut out (any type) fitted and working 
Wheels with large gaps between spokes should be filled in , with speedway style "Moon discs" 
NO sharp edges or points
Tyre choice is free
Shark fin protector on rear sprocket 
Number board on both sides of the bike and front. You chose your own riding number. We need to know before what that will be.
Look at your bike and think "is it dangerous " if you're happy then it should be ok to run. 

Riding gear
MX gear is fine. Leathers, boots, gloves, and an ACU stamped helmet with visor or goggles 

Entry payable on the day £30 Pre book with bike details, make and class, rider name and riding number. Sign on will be 9am approx. Racing (6 runs) for your class should finish mid-afternoon depending on entry levels, this will be run as a multi bike meet in conjunction with speedway, flat trackers and mini bikes. Food van will be on site. Park in the car park on left as you arrive and wheel ( not ride ) your bike into the pit /garage area ( no riding in pit area ) 

Rules /regs basically keep the bike in a safe condition and the rider protected in the event of a fall its hard when you go down !

The Rotten Race, Greece

Dirt Quake's influence continues to reverberate around the world. This time in Greece. It was organised by Sideburn stockists, The Real Intellectuals, here's what they say...

The first Rotten Race took place in Athens, Greece, organized by the city’s very own “The Real Intellectuals”, the creative collective behind handmade motorcycle supplies in the center of Athens.

Answering the need for a flat track event in a country where side sliding is nearly unknown, and following the flair of similar events organized in UK and elsewhere, the first Rotten Race invited riders of all sorts and machines to compete on a DIY track. The location: a traditional horse riding club on the outskirts of the city, which turned into a small scale oval track, ideal for rubber burning and mud-inflicted pain. 

Three distinct classes were available to all Rotten Racers: the custom class, full of scramblers, trackers, cafι racers and vintage machines, the factory off-road class and the “Tiny Rottens”, a class dedicated to miniature two-wheeled machines and Italian Vespas. 

The yellow/black flag dropped a hundred times, and knockout races made a day filled with mud, dirt, rocks and hay fly by. Once the dirt settled down, another class had a chance to race: that of single-horsepower. First comes the Quake, then the Aftershock, but after all is gone, the earth will be rotten and perfect for racing. Dirt freaks finally have a place to race, with or without knobby tires. Stay Rotten. 

The Rusty Butcher

If you're not on instagram, or other social media, you might not know the Rusty Butcher. Mark is a former motocross rider who makes leather goods and other stuff, then started modifying harley Sportsters and having his friend, Preston Burroughs (who is a fearless rider himself), film and photograph him.
We met Mark at Perris and then him, his buddy Cory, and Preston all trucked up to Castle Rock, 20-plus hour drive from their home, to compete at Dirt Quake USA.

This Biltwell film is a good introduction to the fella. G

The fellas at Ellaspede put on their Dust Hustle at the Mick Doohan Raceway a couple of weekends ago. We were proud to be a sponsor of what looks such a fun event.

I just wanted to express our written thanks to you and Sideburn for helping us pull off the Dust Hustle event on Saturday. It wouldn't have been possible without your help and brand support. The feedback we've had so far from everyone who entered and attended to spectate at the event has been highly positive, with many giving us some great feedback about you and the Sideburn Mag. 
Many of the dirt track regulars who also attended the event to see what all the 'hoo-haa' was about were also stoked to find out about your publication. As you know we ended up having 80+ riders enter which was a sell out, as well as 10+ riders for the lunchtime demos (one on a turbo YZF450) and around 500 spectators through the gate on the day, which was an awesome result!

Hell on Wheels Flat Track

The Hell on Wheels crew have been running run what you brung scrambles for years. Last weekend they ran their first flat track at the famous Perris track in So Cal. It looks like fun. Bill from Biltwell took these shots. G

Hell on Wheels x Perris Raceway

Some news from the Southern California Flat Track Association. They run the racing at the Perris Raceway (between Riverside and Murrieta, near Lake Elsinore).

Next flat track race at Perris, Round Seven, will be July 20th. 
Round Eight will take place August 17th. 

Racers: Gates open at 1PM for pit set up and sign up. Spectators: Come early and check out the bikes, or roll in about 4:30 to catch practice. Races usually start about 5 PM. Snack bar will be open with hot and cold goodies. You can bring your own cooler, but no glass bottles please. 

In between, local vintage shop "Hell on Wheels" will be hosting a hooligan style race on August 10th, open to just about anything on two wheels. They're hoping to get a few real flat trackers out there. There will be overnight stays... 

Double-check those details. The video below shows Hell on Wheels all-comers MX race, and that's wild, so the flat track they're set to organise should be great too. G
