Davida X The Rolling Stones

The UK's last remaining motorcycle helmet factory has been chosen to create a special edition Jet for the new Rolling Stones 50th anniversary Exhibitionism at the Saatchi Gallery London.
This from Davida...

Using traditional techniques and all by hand, these special helmets are manufactured and painted in the Davida factory in Merseyside, using the Rolling Stones iconic Classic Tongue logo, both in the original red 'Tongue and Lips' design and in the new Exhibitionism colours.

The Davida Jet helmet is handmade in the UK, with a full leather-lined interior and approved to the highest European standard ECER22-05 for the road and ACU Gold Label for the race-track. All Davida helmets are beautifully painted and finished in their factory in Birkenhead looking over the River Mersey to Liverpool.

The Davida Rolling Stones Jet helmet is available at the Saatchi Gallery in London from April to September 2016 SRP £400 and from Davida dealers around the world, excluding North America, or directly from our website www.davida-helmets.com

Very few people could make playing xylophone as menacing as Brian Jones. Looks like his hair was cut around a Davida. Bill Wyman's Vox teardrop is the business, too. G

From our friends and long-time supporters, Davida.

Created to compliment the Japanese theme of the Southsiders 2015 Wheels and Waves event in Biarritz, the latest helmet colourway to be launched by Davida (UK) Ltd is the 8 Rays over Cream, a stylised 'Rising Sun' used in modern Japan as a symbol of tradition and good fortune. Davida offer an unparalleled choice of more than 100 colourways available as standard as well as a custom bespoke service.

All Davida helmets are hand painted in the UK using a fibreglass shell, lined with fully quilted leather and finished with a satin crown. Davida helmets have a unique ergonomical design to prevent lift and speed and give an exceptionally quiet ride. Using 3 shell sizes to create 6 helmet sizes the Davida is never larger or heavier than it has to be.

OEM Lightning Video

We shared the photos of Old Empire's latest custom build, the OEM Lightning, named after the Cold War jet of the same name, now there's this fun little film.

In the video Alec and Rafe, the two chaps behind Old Empire Motorcycles remind me the band Public Service Broadcasting, another Great British duo. G

#59 Nick Ashley

A huge cross-section of people race in the DTRA: different ages, backgrounds, occupations and goals. Farmers race against painters and decorators; engineers battle with tilers. Builders, photographers, car salesmen, carpenters, film set designers, airline pilots, mechanics and, in Nick Ashley, menswear designers are all DTRA members...

I bought some of Nick Ashley clobber when he had his own label more than ten years ago, then got to know him through Sideburn (Ben knew him before that). Now Nick is head of design for an upmarket menswear label called Private White V.C. that is almost unique in making all its products in the UK.

Nick has always raced and ridden. He's competed in desert rallyes and enduros and now, also, competes in the vintage class on a Cheney Triumph.

There's an amusing interview with Nick here. With some of the highlights being...

The factory in Manchester was there at the start of the industry, and when it’s gone, it’s gone. The whole of the Manchester ship canal – from Liverpool to Manchester – was built for the industry, but it’s all gone apart from this. I dream of getting a ship into Manchester, filling it with product and sailing it to China – and selling a whole load of clothes there. Then I can die a happy man. Out of the mill, out of the factory and even take the voyage – smoking Capstan Full Strength and drinking rum all the way!

We had interest from the UK and wrote a few orders. Britain is a small place and, as I say, people spend all their money on houses and education. If you compare it even to Italy, there’s a vast difference. People dress beautifully, eat beautifully and have loads of sex. That’s their priority in life. Their economy is knackered, but they’re having a great time. Let’s all move to Italy!

Bygone Bodge

Clocked this classic Robin Reliant outside the most pleasant cafe No. 12 Easton, Bristol. Most steel cars of this era have long been sent rusting to the scrapyard, but the 30+ year-old fibreglass on this was no longer sea-worthy either. On closer inspection, what made me smile the most was the coat hanger ariel up-grade. I haven't seen one of those for ages! Do modern cars with digital radio even need an ariel at all? BP

Golden

Sideburn wears and trusts Davida helmets. This is what Davida says about their new latest design...

New from the UK's sole remaining manufacturer of certified motorcycle helmets, these two new Davida colourways. The gold base with Rocket Ron Pinstripe was originally made as a one-off design for Brad Pitt some years ago and now in response to demand has now been added to their range, with a choice of either matt gold (423) or gloss gold (422). These new designs brings the total number of standard colourways available in their range to over 75.

However, when you take into account their bespoke service which delivers dozens of one-off helmet designs every month, Davida UK produce literally hundreds of different colourways every year. Based on the Wirral, Davida UK are proud that, unlike most modern creations, these open face motorcycle helmets are still hand-built in England using the best quality materials available. Every distinctive livery and details is carefully created by individuals who still care about these things.

Established in 1976 and driven by their own needs as motorcyclists, Davida UK have been manufacturing for more than 30 years.

The 422 or 423 Gold Pinstripe design is available on the Davida Jet and Ninety2 at RRP UK £265.00 and on the Davida Speedster at RRP UK £220.83 Ex VAT. It is not available on the Davida Classic.

Do You Comb Your Fringe?

Tomorrow night (Thursday 31st Oct), BBC Four is repeating its documentary Full Throttle: The Glory Days of British Motorbikes. (the above on-line viewing link might not work outside the UK?). The usual faff about Mods versus Rockers but an interesting piece on Lawrence of Arabia, and some coiffure tips on Vespa seat covers. BP

Venhill Safety Wire Pliers

I've gone to UK company Venhill for cables and brake hoses for my last six bikes. They offer a great service, making up silky smooth custom length cables or just supplying replacements for stock bikes. I've just fitted one of their 888 quick action throttles to the Black Arrow too.

Now that Venhill sell safety wire pliers, I love them even more. G

I met Tom from Donhou Cycles at the Bike Shed Event earlier this year. He told me about the bike he was building, the one featured in this film. It sounded amazing. It is amazing. The man's a hero.
