Sideburn 6 release party, London

A wet Wednesday. The wettest Wednesday in August in living memory. Thanks to everyone who came out. Thanks to Dai Jobu for organising it, to Derek at Lewis Leathers for hosting it, to Vedett Beer for lubricating it.

Exhibition Continues...

Dai doesn't do things by halves, and after an excellent lunch at the revamped Viet Hoa on Kingsland Road, I was happy to piggy-back the sturdy Welshman to the Shoreditch High Street shop PRESENT. Started by two former founders of Duffer of St George, it stocks a colourful array of menswear, including Eley Kishimoto - and now Sideburn magazine. The second Red Max'd SR500 is parked in the window. Neil casually offered me a coffee while I was browsing and I congratulated him on the fancy foam motif; not realizing it had been made by the current Swedish national champion barista Mattias Björkland. Together with Gwilym Davies the current world champion barista, they have set up a titanic coffee machine on the shop counter. My already pleasant weekend received extra spring in it's heel. BP

UPDATE:
Steve Red Max is a better photographer than me so I robbed this off his Flickr album

Just A Blur

Matchbox in size, the Maurice Einhardt Neu gallery was rammed for Dai's Jan.21,2010 exhibition. Being just next to Mother ad agency probably helped numbers, it was so heaving I didn't even get to see the band, I've been on rush-hour tubes that were less busy. As well as the usual suspects mentioned in GI's invitation post, it was good to meet up with some of my old gang from the Mean Fuckers. Once the cider ran out, it was on to The Owl & The Pussycat pub for a few more bevies, but me and Red Max Steve - who had brought along the refreshed SRs he had rebuilt for Dai, were peckish and headed for the Rootmaster [sic] double-decker bus restaurant parked up behind the Truman Brewery, with old friends of mine Karta Healy and Nick Ashley. We were only informed once bundled into the back of Mai's Nissan Skyline GT-R; that was even more cramped than the gallery, that it was a French run vegan set-up. I'm not sure if the look of fear on Steve's face was the fear of wether he (or his quiff) would survive some cross-London Fast & Furious lane-splitting, or the prospect of having to eat garlic flavor mung beans. The food was truly Exceptional. Thanks for instigating such a great evening Dai. BP

UPDATE
As Steve was up in town earlier before the masses, he actually got to see the band, This is what Playband look like rehearsing.

Dai Jobu In London this week

Dai Jobu is a Welshman with a finger in plenty of pies. He collaborated with Sideburn for issue 4 and has this knees-up, to launch his naked girl + dirt tracker calendar, in trendy East London this week. We're intrigued. Expect (at least one of) the Wilson Brothers, Steve Red Max and Dave Death Spray in attendance. And you're all welcome. Dai says... GI

'An exhibition of images taken from the Garage Calender, and the first live performance of PLAYBAND in the gallery. In addition opening on the same night around the corner at PRESENT you can see the exhibition continue and other products available in the store. Art, Music, Print, Girls, Boys, Hot Cider, World Class Cappucino...and a few Bikes...All Welcome

Born in Wales, Dai Jobu has in spite of his humble origins a very broad palette when it comes to what he likes.

As a man of spirit - or hwyl as it translates in his native tongue - he loves life.
And life to him means girls, motorbikes, art, fashion and music etc. in any and all combinations.
In part due to his small town beginnings, travel has always played a major part in his gameplan. As a result of his wanderlust he has been inspired by a veritable garden of earthly delights but by far his greatest influence has been found in the cultural mores of Japan in general and of Tokyo specifically; whether by day or night, it’s worldly wisdom is a great inspiration to his life and work.
Like some kind of unshaven renaissance man Dai Jobu has instigated a wide variety of projects including the Dai Jobu membership group, the Dai Jobu Menswear range, his re-imagining of the classic Pirelli publication with the Dai Jobu 2010 Garage Calendar, not to mention his recent move into band management with the PLAYBAND project. His involvement in Street Tracker bike customization is just another sideline that should keep Dai Jobu on the road to bigger and even better things.'
