Flashback: Rollerburn

Back in 2011 Sideburn and some friends came up with an idea for a bike show that incorporated riding, all different kids of custom bikes, stalls, live music and roller derby.

It was the kickstart for a lot of the current UK 'shed built' scene, like the Bike Shed shows.

This advert was made by Drogo Michie, who later joined the DTRA as Thunderbike racer on his own, very smart Co-Built Rotax.

Guy Martin came, so did Charlie Chuck (Uncle Peter) and I joined them for a Rollerball race at the end. It was as sketchy as hell. G

Robert Dancel

This is Robert Dancel in his original Tokyo T-Shirt and his new Davida Tokyo Helmet.
Following Sideburn’s Rollerburn last year, we sent a Davida Tokyo helmet to Robert Dancel, one of the original actors in the 1975 cult movie Rollberball. A professional skater in real life, Robert was hired for the film alongside other team mates from the Canadian Roller Derby Association. He gained celebrity status amongst Rollerball Aficionados as the Tokyo player who took out Houston’s ‘Moonpie’ and was then subsequently killed by the Houston Team Captain ( James Caan).

Film director Alex Cox wrote the story to accompany that feature - it's an exclusive essay about the film Rollerball. Cox's Repo Man is having a special screening in London on Feb 29. Dress code is 1980s punk. Sounds interesting. Go to Midnight Movies for more info. G

Davida Rollerburn Helmets Now Available

Davida has had a long association with Sideburn Magazine, so when they came up with the out-there concept that was Rollerburn it was almost a given that Davida would get involved, particularly given the nature of the beast. Rollerburn loosely combined roller derby, motorbikes (mainly custom, classic and flat-track), skaters, live music and motorcycle artwork.

The main highlight of the Rollerburn event took its inspiration from the classic 1975 genre-film Rollerball starring James Caan as a fierce, fight-to-the-death competitor for the Houston Team, fighting for freedom, in a violent sport against teams from New York, Tokyo and Madrid.

The main event at Rollerburn featured TT Hero Guy Martin, Sideburn’s Gary Inman and comedian Charlie Chuck recreating the films iconic game where motorbikes dragged fearless skaters around a track. Rollerburn created the perfect platform to display the skill, enthusiasm and commitment of two British motorcycling companies, with riders dragging tattooed skating vixens on specially produced Flat Track race bikes supplied by Co-Built and wearing Davida helmets created in each of the teams designs from the original film. Rollerburn Helmets

Film buffs will notice from our Drogo filmed Rollerburn trailers, that we haven't gone for period correct Riddell American football helmets with chin bars, ear holes and pointed studs across the forehead. Our Rollerball inspired motorcycle helmets were hand-made by Davida. We wanted something that could be worn after the party is over, rather than just being a 'novelty item'. We went for their Speedster 90 which is a very similar snug shape to the 60s Buco, but the same paintjob could be applied on any of their other models.
Alan Davenport, their usually invisible engineer / production manager / shadowy beaver, who has worked at Davida since 1981 has taken this project to heart, calling on his misspent youth '...emulating Rollerball, Death Race 2000 and Mad Max on the roads for real...' (quote un-quote). As well as the orange-red combo of the original 1975 film's hero Johnathan's Houston team, Davida have also painted up some in the style of Tokyo's yellow-black, Madrid's green-grey, and New York's blue with white stars. Homework

We fear there may be some at the back of the class that still don't 'get' ROLLERBURN. It's quite a simple concept. Rollerskating is something kids in tutus and pigtails do in parks, the afore mentioned involves grownups and motorbikes, and is a bit more noisy. A night in watching the original 1975 cult film Rollerball on DVD is recommended homework. BP
UPDATE: Nick is right, Rollerball has a killer soundtrack that was conducted by Andrew Preview (below). Rollerburn will have a killer soundtrack too, supplied by The Stags (Wigan), Les Terribles (Paris) and The Hip Priests (Nottingham).

Under the lino of his kitchen that he is re-doing, a friend of mine found a yellowed 1975 newspaper. Alongside an advert for a great deal on MFI fitted kitchens was this spot-the-ball competition. Rather than the usual George Best bicycle kick - with erased ball, it's the Rollerball oval minus the deadly steelball - Read, if you havent already, the wonderfully high-brow deconstuction of the cult classic by Alex Cox in Sideburn #3. Our friends at the Kitschy Kustom Kraft Kollective have stocked up with issues of Sideburn to sell at this weekend's show. Their stand is in the outside area. We've also found out that Minx (featured in Sideburn 6 and on the free poster given away with that issue) will be rolling around the show site both days along with her fellow Lincolnshire Bomber Rollergirls .

Sideburn #6 Pre-Order Now

OK, it's time to stop teasing and tell you Sideburn 6 will be back from the printers on Thursday August 19 - a week today. We're taking
pre-orders so we can write some jiffybags and avoid freaking out (this is a kitchen table operation remember).
There have been a couple of changes:
1. We have a new webshop that should be a bit easier to deal with. But now ALL prices are in UK £. Pound notes (it automatically calculates the exchange rate from which ever country you are in)
