Barbara Fritchie Classic 2010

Heard about the 4th of July Barbara Fritchie Classic from Sideburn last year... so I rode up to Frederick, Maryland yesterday. It was blue skies and hot! The track got as much maintenance action as the time spent racing. Dusty as hell but the crew kept the surface fairly rut free and fast. Saw rooster tails from the berm ripped up by the National Numbers in the Twins Class. The Classic is not on the National Circuit, but had some good riding in the Expert Twins and Singles Classes. "People watching" was the best entertainment, from Pagan Bikers to kids chasing the water trucks for a spray job. One old guy looked like he rolled around in a bag of dirt... such sacrifice for a close-up look at a crossed up racer!! In the end, Baker took Carver in the Singles and Sammy Halbert rode great to beat Wiles and Australian Luke Gough in Twins.

Oh yeah, Wiles gets the interview and Sammy gets the girls! You got any girls in the UK? See ya, Greg.

Tim I kept meaning to email you and say how much I particularly love this shot. There's so much going on. It's so competitive.
There is an optical illusion, in that Joe is bigger (in reality and in the shot) and it looks like he's ahead, but then you notice Shayna (tiny in reality and tucked down small in the shot), her throttle hand is in front, she is definitely ahead - and holding a steady line, whereas Joe has a weave on - was he ahead and got cut up by Shayna steaming through? or is he trying to go around the outside? What was the scenario?
I also like the shallow depth of field that still has the grit spit up pin sharp.
That diagonal white stripe is great graphically too - is it the start / finish line?
And to top it all, some nice blank space for the text, pefect for our Sideburn layout!

Ben, Thanks very much! The photo is from an AMA semi-pro event called the Barbara Fritchie Classic, in Frederick, MD, which is only about 30 miles from my house. It's not part of the Grand National Championship but often a number of the GNC riders will enter.
That shot is the first in a small series (see attached). Shayna was passing Joe at the Start/Finish, and looking at her right wrist you can clearly see how she powered deeper into the corner. The 4th photo is from the succeeding lap, and shows how much ground Shayna gained after making the pass.

Barbara Fritchie Classic

'I was at the Barbara Fritchie Classic (oldest continually running half-mile in the US I think - this was the 87th running) earlier this month. Sorry the "action shot" is a tad blurry - man he seemed a lot closer when I hit the button - they were movin'. I had a couple others but either I timed it wrong, way out of focus, etc. Oh well.
The Triumph did pretty well and was probably the oldest bike out there. The SV650 was pretty interesting - custom frame and no airbox / reworked throttle bodies, etc. The owner said it actually made too much power and spun up too much so he was selling it.
Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.' Stephen
