Australian Jesus

I used to love Mambo stuff, the whole image and feel of the 'brand'. The book, Still Life With Franchise, is one of my all-time favourites. The spirit continues with Deus Ex Machina.
I found this hang-tag when I was looking through an old shoebox full of memories. If you ever do that check out Hoarder Magazine. G

A pile of Barry Sheene

Inspired by Gary's Notebooks and Tickets posts, I dug under the bed for these microcassettes (remember them?) from the three and a bit years I spent editing Barry Sheene's monthly column for Bike magazine between 2000 and 2003. I'd call him up at his house on the Gold Coast in Australia a couple of times a month and we'd have a chat, which would end up as the 1000-word column. I'd sometimes fax him possible ideas ahead of time and, quite rightly, he'd studiously ignore them. Much of it is fairly straightforward stuff, but there were certain outbursts that were never fit for publication and some funny moments. One went something like this:

Sheene: ... yeah, and so... er...
[PAUSE]
MP: Barry?
[LONG PAUSE]
MP: Barry? Are you still there?
Sheene: Eh?
MP: You were saying...
[PAUSE]
MP: Barry?
[HUGE PAUSE]
MP: Barry??
Sheene: Oh, yeah, sorry Mick, there was this gorgeous couple of birds on the telly. Right, where were we?

I keep meaning to transfer the tapes to digital, so I at least have a back-up, but seven and a half years after Barry died of cancer, I've still not got round to it. Mr 'Get On With It' himself would be appalled. MP

Notebooks

This Hoarder thing is making me look at all the old dross I can't bring myself to get rid of in a different way. These are just a few of the dozens of notebooks I keep and never refer back to. If I have two notebooks on the go in an awkward crossover period the stickers help me pick up the right one. See any you like? G

Tickets

Inspired by Hoarder magazine I spent five minutes looking through one of dozen or so shoe boxes full of stuff I can't bring myself to throw away. I found these tickets. Shame they haven't got the years on them. I'm guessing the earliest of these are 1987, RTFC and one of the Ramones is later. GI
UPDATE: The green and white Ramones is 1987 (I was 16); Ramones with Joey is 1991; RTFC might be 1995.

Hoarder magazine

I don't know how he did it, but Mark, who created this fanzine, crawled into my head and made Hoarder from my memories. Each issue of the colour photocopied fanzine focusses on a different shoe box full of detritus he never threw away. Different issues have different themes. Some are 60s girlie mags, other are 1990s indie music fanzines, another is a shoe box full of hang tags from clothing. I have about 15 shoe boxes full of 'memories' too. As Mark the editor states.

'Any self respecting visual obssesive knows the golden rule – don’t throw anything away.hoarder magazine exists to document the mountains of stuff the superflake studio cannot bear to throw away. old tickets, football cards, fanzines, hang tags, stickers, magazines, flyers …..you name it superflake saves it. One man's litter is superflake's cultural-can’t bear to part with it-debris. superflake says, ”fuck the ‘life laundry’ dullards!'

Hoarder magazine is from House of Superflake. I think he limits each fanzine to a run of 33 too. I think there might be online editions too. How very 'now'. G
